Check out this site for Mattel’s official information on Barbie collecting:

Also check out this site from About.com:

http://www.ebay.com is a great place to find collectibles. Be specific in your searches — list designer names or particular doll names. Also, caveat emptor any time you order online. You may find old/rare barbies at thrift stores and rummage sales. People often sell stuff/give stuff away without knowing its true value.
Good luck with your collection.
I am not 100% if they do Barbies but they do everything else…

i know they have a good range of dolls from different cuiltures
There’s also the Dolls forums on RarityGuide.com
You can find some “older”/rare Barbie’s on Ebay. Another place to look would be garage/yard sales, thrift stores, church sales, salvation army stores and goodwill type stores. I have found some wonderful finds at these places.
I got an Original “Casey” Barbie doll still in her package for a dime. I brought her home and looked it up in my Barbie Value guide book and she is worth $170.00. I have also found older barbie dolls like Francine with the long eyelashes and the little Tutti dolls, and Skipper. Some may need to be cleaned up a bit but they are great finds!!
You can check at your local library for some of the Barbie value books. Ebay is a good place to get an idea of how much they might be worth. But then the next thing is trying to get someone to pay the price that you want. Every website you may venture to may have different values listed for the same doll. Here is the website for Barbie at Mattel http://www.barbiecollector.com/
or you could try this site…. http://www.dollreference.com/ for some descriptions of Barbie’s and her friends that are older.
If you google Barbie collectors you will come up with many websites of people who collect Barbie and know the worth of the dolls.
Good luck on your search!!
